Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies Are Awesome!

I’m not going to claim I’m a key lime pie connoisseur. In fact before this weekend, if asked, I would have said I didn’t like key lime pie. So why did I buy one? Simple. I’ve been passing by Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies for years now and never stopped in for one. I’ve paddled my kayak down to Red Hook Brooklyn countless times. I’ve even ridden my bike there. I’ve stopped by the Fairway (once somewhat unique to Red Hook) for a snack or some lunch. I’ve visited the waterfront museum. I’ve even had a drink at a local dive bar. Somehow I always passed up on Steve’s Authentic. This weekend Cathy and I were relaxing in Red Hook and I decided enough was enough — let’s go get some damn key lime pie already. What lies through the quirky front door? (ps: read the signs!) Can we buy slices? Will we have to buy a whole pie? Are there variations? I’ll spoil some of the mystery for you — They don’t sell slices and there are no variations. They sell whole pies in multiple sizes. You can, however, buy a 4″ tart which is the equivalent of a personal size pie. For the adventurous there’s a chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick! If you decide to eat some key lime pie on the spot I’d recommend grabbing a cup of their Key Limonade (deliciously bitter and complimentary to the pie). We opted for the tarts and washed them down with the Key Limonade. Simply put, the key lime pie was sensational. It has a buttery graham cracker crust which leaves you craving more and while the entire bite is on the sweet side it’s a well balanced sweetness. My only criticism of the joint is that it’s a bit pricey — something I’m willing to overlook as I’ll keep this stop as a once in a while treat. In any event, If you’re in Red Hook you should stop on by Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies. You won’t regret it!
