Newcastles Geordie Schooner glass? Not that easy.

I must admit, I’m a bit of a beer nerd. Not that I claim to be an expert on all things beer but I do enjoy the occasional pint and it’s always interesting to compare the drinking experience between the typical American pint glass and glassware the brewer has selected for that particular beer.

My current favorite beer is Newcastle so I decided I would purchase the Geordie Schooner glass (pictured to the left) which Newcastle pushes as the ideal glassware to consume their beer. Unfortunately I was unable to find the glass anywhere but from a few ebay sellers who are charging exorbitant amounts for glasses they probably lifted from a local pub. Since I had no luck with resellers I decided I would go to the source so I contacted Newcastle via the contact email provided on their website last night. I received a quick response this morning. Unfortunately they were unable to help me out. Not that they were rude or anything but they more or less let me know that I’m out of luck unless I own a restaurant/bar (which I do not). So much for the holiday spirit!

The response from Newcastle (Heineken) Consumer Affairs:

Dear Mr. Schiffner:

Thank you for your recent email message. Unfortunately, all of our points of sale items are for promotional use only. If you are a restaurant or bar owner, please contact your Heineken USA sales representative or distributor to request merchandise.

Thank you for your interest in Heineken USA.

Kind Regards,

Heineken USA Consumer Affairs

I can understand breweries/distributors trying to avoid selling a line of branded glassware but when you’re pushing a new type of glassware (at least new in the US) it would be nice if you could purchase the glassware somewhere. For now I’ll have to settle for a standard pint glass.

If anyone has a source for one of these glasses post the details in the comments!

  1. I used to work for Scottish and Newcastle Breweries here in Newcastle in various pubs, and I have never seen a branded Schooner. I can tell you that it’s a half pint glass though (you should never drink Broon Ale from a pint glass apparently). Try and find a friendly bar who get Brown Ale in, we used to give away bits and pieces to regulars or people who expressed an interest- it used to just clog up our storage areas otherwise.

    • HI Hev,

I went to a local bar and asked the bar tender about this glass. He happened to have one and gave it to me! It’s the exact glass pictured — branded and all. Now I can enjoy Newcastle the way it was intended ;-)

      Thanks for the advice!
