Ticketmaster, how isn’t this illegal? Or is it…

Today I attempted to purchase 2 tickets to The Addams Family on Broadway through Ticketmaster. As I always do with Broadway shows I went to broadwaybox.com to look for discount codes and then proceeded to look for tickets using this code (BB2011). For this show at the selected time the discounted tickets after fees cost $86.75 each vs $144.75 each at full price. Quite a savings (though still not cheap). The fine print for this discount is as follows:

BroadwayBox Special Discount ticket offer for The Addams Family
    Save up to $55!

    $79 (Reg. $126.50-$136.50)
    Orchestra/Front Mezzanine Seats

    $50 (Reg. $91.50-$96.50)
    Mezzanine Seats

    Offer valid for Tuesday-Friday performances January 4 – March 25, 2011

Once on ticketmaster.com I selected the show (The Addams Family), date (3/25), and time (8pm). The show landed squarly within the terms of the discount code. I entered the discount code and ticketmaster provided feedback saying the code was accepted. The site then provided a map of seats the discount code applied to. I selected 2 seats (Orchestra Center Row L seats 107, 108) and clicked checkout. After entering the captcha I was provided the following error:

    Uh-oh!

Sorry, your selected seats are about to be removed for one of two reasons:

    • Another fan beat you to ‘em. Seats you select aren’t officially reserved until you click “Checkout” and pass the security check, which means another fan can still purchase them. Please try again.
    • We couldn’t fulfill your order on this map. Please try different seats, or different ticket options for the same seats. If that doesn’t work, please click “Choose Seats for Me” (top right) and we’ll search best available based on your input.

Ok — that sucks — so I selected different seats. Same result. New seats again. Same result. Mind you this entire time the map still showed my original seats and each successive selection as being available AND being eligible under the discount code I used. I closed my browser, cleared my cache, tried a different browser — all with the same result. Finally I removed the discount code and attempted to purchase the tickets at full price. Voila, I was able to purchase the tickets. In fact, at full price I was able to purchase any of the tickets which threw the above error while using a discount code. A call to Ticketmaster yielded no resolution or explanation. Clearly Ticketmaster is pulling some sort of scam here and as usual there is no recourse. Unfortunately the full price tickets are outside my budget, not to mention I have a moral issue with paying into whatever Ticketmaster is trying to pull here. Has anyone else experienced this sorta issue with Ticketmaster?

One Comment on “Ticketmaster, how isn’t this illegal? Or is it…”

    1. It is getting impossible to get tickets to anything anymore without paying ridiculously inflated prices. What do we need to do to put an end to these slimy schemes?!
