If you know me personally or follow me on twitter you know I’m a fairly serious cyclist. I ride in several high-mileage tours each summer, and, most recently, I began cycling to work. The commute takes me through portions of the old Vanderbilt Parkway — now known as the Queens Greeenway — and down several city streets. Portions of the Queens Greenway are car-free but I do spend approximately 1/2 of the commute on mixed use roads. This is where I’m supposed to enjoy the protection of a bike lane. Nice in theory however inconsiderate people and motorist force cyclist like myself outside the bike lanes. Across a couple of commutes I snapped some pictures of the obstructions I face every day. While not quite as epic as Casey Neistat’s video I think they illustrate the bike lane dangers quite effectively. NYC has no problem ticketing cyclist. How about ticketing bike lane offenders? If you’re not a cyclist but utilize bike lanes for other reasons, please consider the dangers your use presents to cyclist. Ahhh, Bike Lanes.
Maybe you need to make some little courtesy cards you can give people or leave on cars about proper use of bike lanes!
