CRT monitors await their fate in monitor purgatory

RIP. You served us well, but alas your time has come to meet your maker. Some of you may be spared but for the rest it’s off to the pearly gates of the dumping grounds.

My new desktop computer – built the smart way!

Around 7 years ago I purchased a high-end laptop — the Acer Aspire 2025WLMI. That laptop was one of the best computer purchases I ever made. Although it can’t compete with today’s offerings, it’s still plenty fast enough to code on, develop web sites, web apps, and handle the image creation/manipulation related to those tasks. Thanks to the combination of an Intel Centrino 1.8Ghz Processor and an ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 Pro 128 video card I was even able to play games like Quake Live [...]

UPS Ground? Think again…

A couple of weeks ago I sent a pair of defective memory modules to Corsair for replacement under warranty. Everything about the RMA process went smoothly. Last night I arrived home and was pleased to see my replacement memory had arrived. That was until I saw the condition of the package. Unfortunately the modules were shipped via UPS Ground which seems to mean the package is used as a chew toy for dogs, a seat cushion for overweight drivers, and as a ball in a rugby match. No matter what [...]

Pictures from the 2010 NYC Five Boro Bike Tour

It’s nearly two weeks since I rode in the 2010 NYC Five Boro Bike Tour and I figured it was about time to post some of the pictures from it. The tour was great! Perfect weather, upbeat crowds, and plenty to see. I did not get to take many pictures while riding, but I did get a few nice shots throughout the day. For the complete series please visit the: 2010 TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour image gallery. Some of my favorite pictures can be found below.

2010 NYC Five Boro Bike Tour – Pre Tour

Tomorrow morning I’ll embark on another cycling journey. I’ll be participating in the NYC Five Boro Bike Tour for my second time. Last year, my first time participating in the ride, the weather was cold and rainy but this year its supposed to be sunny and beautiful. It should be a great time. If you live along the route or are just looking for something to do come on down and cheer on all the riders! If you plan on watching the event let me know where you’ll [...]

Thought on modern webpage layouts + iPhone OS Resource limits

With the imminent death of IE6, the use of creative new webpage layouts has steadily increased. Many of these layouts use complicated nested structures + css2/3 styling. These newer layouts have also led to the increased use of the transparent png-24 image format and the widespread use of dynamic and gradient filled background images. This has led almost all web-developers to ask themselves the following questions. How much time should be taken to support IE6? Should we drive the final nail into the IE6 coffin? Increasingly designers and programmers are [...]

iPad unboxing (well, sorta)

I have to confess — I have no intention of buying a first generation iPad. Then again I’m not sure I will ever be able to rationalize the purchase of such an expensive device with so many restrictions. I own an iPhone. I like my iPhone. I have come to accept restrictions on my phone. I can not and will not accept restrictions like that on a tablet. Lets be honest here, the iPad doesn’t really do anything my iPhone cant already do. I love my iPhone but lets just [...]
