Install Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox

WIndows 8's Metro UI
Windows 8 is here. You’ve seen all the screen shots, read all the blogger reviews, but what is it REALLY like? The only way to find out is to try it for yourself but switching your primary computer over to a preview OS isn’t feasible and not everyone has extra hardware laying around to test the new OS on. That’s where virtualization comes into play. Windows 8 can be tested on your current computer via Oracle VM VirtualBox. It won’t run as fast as a native installation but it will [...]

Selling 9/11

World Trade Center (Twin Towers)
9-11-2001 was a terrible day in our nations history. It left a scar in the hearts of millions and changed the landscape of NYC forever. No one who lives (or lived) in NYC can look at the Manhattan skyline without remembering the events of that day. Neither will those affected by the other two planes involved in the attacks, who’s visual reminders are minimal. Anyone that lost friends or family, regardless of where they reside, will be constantly reminded of that day by the absence of their loved ones. I [...]

Schiffner.com 4.0 Redux

It’s been a little over a week since I launched the latest version of the Schiffner.com UI. The overall visual design has remained largely the same but I have made some changes to modernize the user experience. If you haven’t had time to familiarize yourself with the changes please read all about them below. For starters the site now leverages CSS 3 styling. If you’re using a modern web browser (Firefox 4+, Google Chrome, Safari 5+, Opera 10+, and IE 9+) you’ll now notice softly rounded corners in the top [...]

Hike to the summit of Mount Washington — Check!

Feature
Last Sunday I hiked to the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. 3 days have passed since completing the climb and I’ve had plenty of time to rest, recuperate, and reflect on the experience. The verdict? Hiking to the summit of Mount Washington was awesome! It was the most difficult hike I’ve made to date. Totaling roughly 4 hours the hike was a grueling assault on the human body with ever increasing inclines and an elevation gain of 4,288 feet. I began the hike from the Pinkham Notch Visitor [...]

Mount Washington Hike Preparation

MtWashington_Featured
This weekend myself and my old college buddy Milosz are heading up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire for some camping, mountain biking, and to hike Mount Washington. Just a little day hike to the summit at 6,288 ft, traversing more than 8 miles of varying terrain, increasingly thinning air, strong wind, and varied weather patterns. We’ll be making the hike on either Saturday or Sunday depending on which day looks better weather-wise. I’m no foreigner to hiking. I’ve gone hiking in the Catskill Mountains of New York since [...]

Hurricane Irene Obliterates Blenheim Bridge

Blenhein Bridge View #1
Hurricane Irene might have been a lot of bark with no bite in New York City but it’s fury was unleashed on upstate New York. Entire towns have been washed out and communities have been lost but some of the greatest losses may be Irene’s destruction of the region’s historical landmarks. Among the many losses is a covered bridge named Blenheim Bridge. Built in 1854 it was the longest single span covered bridge in the world. Now all that remains are the foundations where it once sat. Myself and Cathy [...]

A body found in Anable basin!

In a turn of events worthy of it’s own Law & Order episode, a body was discovered by a group of kayakers in Anable Basin tonight. While preparing for a leisurely paddle, kayakers from the Long Island City Community Boathouse noticed something floating in the water. Upon investigation it was clear the object floating was in fact a person laying face down. Authorities were immediately notified and Anable Basin was quickly flooded with FDNY, NYPD, EMS, and just about any other agency you would expect to report [...]

Hacked! :-(

Earlier this week schiffner.com was hacked. Though the method of entry was rudimentary the results of the unauthorized and malicious access were quite serious. The intruders inserted malicious code into dozens of pages throughout the site. This code redirected visitors to javascript which would then infect their computer with a trojan horse. The hack was not limited to schiffner.com. It extended to all of Cathy and my sites — cathyclarke.com, drinkorbedrunk.com, mokeymonkey.com, and no-bling.com. To explain exactly what occurred I’ll step back to May. After years of hosting our websites [...]

An eventful, non-eventful drive to Rochester

There we were, driving to Rochester again. I was in the drivers seat with Cathy sitting shotgun. After driving this same route for the last 12 years the trip has become boring — Hell, to say the drive had become boring is an understatement. The only decision to make takes place at Binghamton; Rochester via Syracuse (shorter) or Rochester via Corning (more scenic). After completing the drive, all 370 miles worth, hundreds of times, the “driver” has almost become unnecessary. Sometimes it seems as though the car could complete the [...]

Kayaking: The off-season and the season opener at Sebago Canoe Club

Chirp chirp, chirp chirp. Woh, it’s been quiet around here lately! It’s about time for some kayaking updates. I’m one of those warm weather paddlers. I just can’t justify purchasing a dry suit seeing as how the majority of people I paddle with don’t have one and those who do don’t launch out of the same boathouse I do. So…how do I keep myself busy during the cold months? A ton of skiing, kayak polo, and computer programming. With an old college buddy of mine living within a 1-2 hour [...]
